About 17 SOFAAR members met on Saturday October 13th to work on projects and show them off at the Paradise Hall.

Fun fibre gathering
East meets West exhibit held over till Nov. 3th
If you have not had a chance to visit the East meets West exhibit at the King’s theatre lobby in Annapolis Royal, you still have time.
The exhibit will now remain up until Saturday, November 3rd.
The 30 or more 10 by 10 inch pieces of different fibre techniques are wonderful to look at and we are thrilled to have had this joint exhibit with VISDA (Vancouver Island Surface Design Association).
Fibre stitching day: Saturday, October 13th
Join us at the Paradise Community Hall from 1 to 4 pm on Saturday, October 13th for an afternoon of stitching and fibre crafting. Bring your current project or a show and tell and share an afternoon with like-minded fibre enthusiasts!

Annual Maritime Lace Day: Oct 6th
This 4th annual Maritime Lace Day takes place on October 6th from 10 am to 4 pm at the Caribou Community Hall in Caribou River, NS.
Attendees are invited to bring their lunch and show and tell of all things lace.
The event is open to the public from 2 to 4 pm to see bobbin lace being made.
Special guest Gary Wood will be demonstrating the turning of wooden bobbins. And there will be a lace supplies for sale.
East meets West and Art of Fibre exhibits
Not one but two wonderful fibre exhibits to see in the month of September. Opening receptions are the weekend of September 8th and 9th.
East meets West is a joint exhibit with the Vancouver Surface Design Association. This exhibit will be at the King’s Theatre Lobby from August 30th to November 3th. The opening reception will take place on Saturday evening, September 8th at 7 pm and will be joined via video link with the opening at the Portal’s Gallery in Ducan BC.
The Art of Fibre is a SOFAAR members’ exhibit taking place at the Chapel Gallery at ARCAC in Annapolis Royal from September 2nd to October 13th, 2018. The opening reception will take place Sunday afternoon, September 9th from 1 – 3 pm.
Beautiful silk quilt being raffled
SOFAAR has been donated a gorgeous pure silk quilt created by Marilyn Preus valued at at least $2,500.00. We are selling tickets for this wonderful quilt (and matching square pillow) at $5.00 each.
We have recently obtained a permit from council to set up on market days every other week in the small courtyard across from the market, directly adjacent to King’s theatre.

Manifesto for World Embroidery Day 30th of July
Textile reflects our world; embroideries can show the expressions of our time. Embroidery and textiles can focus on the social injustices between countries.
By the means of embroidery we can draw attention to the necessity of engaging in the force of textile in global trade and with it in world peace. Textiles is a power and let us use embroidery as an inspiration for people to engage in creativity that leads to a better understanding between countries and between people.
To embroider is a peaceful occupation. It can be traditional made from a common remembrance, drawn designs, from a pattern, or from your own imagination. You em- broider for joy, beauty, decoration and for the creation of identity.
Stitches can be decorative, beautiful, comforting, repeating, healing, telling, plea- surable, rebellious, caressing and perfect.
People embroider out of joy, as a hobby, professionally, for the bare necessities of life and as an act of freedom. You embroider together with others or in meditative soli- tude.
We want to acknowledge embroidery as an act of free creativity, which can lead to free, creative thoughts and ideas. We want to tie our embroidery threads from the privi- leged northern hemisphere together with stiches that are sewn by embroidering sisters and brothers all over the world.
We want to be part of a joyfully creative peace movement.
The initiative came from Skåne Sy-d, a local group of Broderiakademin, the SwedishEmbroiderer’s Guild. The first World Embroidery Day took place in Vismarlöv, 30th July 2011. The importance of embroidery must be made known and World Embroidery Day will spread around the world. Make 30th July a day filled with creativity for the sakeof Peace, Freedom and Equality.

Fibre gathering July 26th
SOFAAR invites you to a BYOP (Bring Your Own Project) gathering on July 26, 6 to 8 p.m., upstairs at ARTsPLACE (396 St. George Street, Annapolis Royal).
This is a time to work on your current project, maybe get some help with a snag, and visit with your fellow SOFAAR members.
For those participating in East Meets West, this is an opportunity to get any questions answered about finishing, hanging sleeves, etc., and/or to submit your work.
If you are putting a piece or pieces in the Members’ Exhibit (due date August 16th for submissions) and you would like that photographed for the submission, please bring along that work as well.
Céleste will be on hand to answer questions about this exhibit.
